Cheesy Garlic Toast & Ways to Use Up Bread

For those who like to bake their own bread, it’s often a feast or a famine. I find that we’re either out of bread and I have no time to make it, or I’ve made too much and we need to eat it quickly before it goes bad. When we have to eat up extra bread, these are my favorite ways to use it up:

  • Croutons
  • French Toast Casserole
  • Cheesy Garlic Toast
  • Meatballs

Croutons

Croutons are quite possibly the easiest thing to make with leftover bread. Depending on how stale your bread is, you may need to soak the bread in oil (such as olive oil) until it’s thoroughly absorbed. Then toss with a dash of salt and pepper, garlic powder and oregano and saute on medium low, turning throughout the process until they reach the desired golden-brown color. Serve on your favorite salad with chunks of Conebella Farm Cheese!

French Toast Casserole

French toast casserole is certainly not on the list of the most healthy foods ever, but it’s tasty! Plus, you can make it with eggs and raw milk from our farm to make it even more delicious! My go-to recipe is the French Toast Casserole recipe from the Pioneer Woman, but I usually cut the sugar waay down since we serve it with maple syrup and fruit. This is a great way to use up bread that doesn’t turn out just right for some reason. Once I completely forgot to add salt to my bread, but I figured out a great way to use up bread without salt! I just added extra salt into the French toast casserole and it was delicious!

Meatballs

Italian Style Meatballs are a great way to use up leftover bread. Soak the bread in a little bit of milk and mix with egg, Parmesan cheese and herbs. I prefer meatballs made with only beef, but if you search Italian meatballs, most recipes will call for beef and pork. Choose whatever sounds best to you! This recipes is the most similar to what I’ve made:

Cheesy Garlic Toast

A personal favorite, Cheesy Garlic Toast can be made with stale bread, some butter, garlic powder and your choice of Conebella Farm Cheese. You could even spread some of our cheese spread on it instead of butter!

To make this recipe, just use:

  • A few slices of bread (stale is ok!)
  • Butter
  • Garlic powder
  • Cheddar, Colby or Fresh Mozzarella Cheese – choose your favorite flavor
  • Herbs or green onion – your choice

Spread the butter or cheese spread on the bread. Add shredded cheese until mostly covered. Bake at 425F for 7-10 minutes until cheese is melted and golden brown. (Watch closely as oven temperatures vary.)
Serve and enjoy!
